Street Civics. LA
Why StreetCivics LA?
⦁ 40% of U.S. adults are unable to name all three braches of government (1)
⦁ A comprehensive study from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation reveals an alarming truth from 2,000 registered voters. It shows more than 70% of Americans fail a basic civic literacy quiz on topics like the three branches of government, the number of Supreme Court justices and other basic functions of democracy (2).
⦁ While two thirds of Americans say they studied civics in high school, only 25% say they are “very confident” they can explain how our system of government works (2).
⦁ A report by UCLA and UC Riverside released in 2023 found that although there has been some improvement “…civic education remains a low priority within the state’s public schools”. (3)

About StreetCivics LA
Statement of Purpose:
L.A. is a large, diverse city. There are pockets of communities where civics education is lacking or not well taught for high schoolers. We feel this is an important subject that warrants attention.
My goal as a U.C.L.A. undergraduate is to address the gaps and create a fun, engaging and safe place to learn about the government, voting, and our responsibilities as citizens so we can collectively share our voices to positively impact our communities here in L.A. There is enough work to do here, so L.A. is our focus.
Our goal is to direct live education to one or two “home groups” but also to direct what we learn from our live sessions to social media participants and L.A. network connections.
Our goal is to launch soon! Stay tuned.
